Vital Weekly and The quietus reviews

Great day for You Won’t Remember This reviews. First up, Vital Weekly writes, “‘You Won’t Remember This’ is a breezy Avant-folk tune with a slightly hoarse voice, starting mellow with acoustic guitars but fully opening up when the drum machines and electronics kick in… ‘World Map’, on the other side, is a bit more abstract in terms of ‘pop’ or ‘folk’, with a significant role for the drum machine, and all the other sounds around appear in a dub form, coming and going. But the melodic aspect of this song isn’t forgotten and gives this song a great flavour as well.”

Then the Cassingle series gets a shoutout in this month’s Spool’s Out column in The Quietus (!!!!). “From a tentative acoustic opening, the duo of Elizabeth Joan Kelly and David Rodriguez ascend to a glorious Tropicália meets shoegaze epic. It’s ridiculous in its ambition, cramming an album’s worth of ideas into two minutes and thirty seconds.”

Woke up this morning to quite a few happy notifications. First, Monolith Cocktail has a great write-up of C.M.S.O. This lovely excerpt should get you to want to read the whole thing:

A writer of repute on the failures of tech, communication and self-preservation, Rodriguez (who also files his musical experiments under Alison’s Disapproval) lends a constantly filtered and affected spoken word narration across all six tracks as Kelly swans, touches the ethereal with her diaphanous woos, calls, arias (a merger of Laurie Anderson, cosmic opera and Jane Weaver). Often transmogrified by robotic effects and the slowing and speeding up of that instructive monologue, Rodriguez’s message is constantly warped, broken up: sometimes on the verge of some Max Headroom glitch stutter, or the slurred falling apart speech of HAL.

We also seem to have successfully stumped Vital Weekly, who write of the album:

The music is mostly a computer treated voice/vocoder style, and along with some electronics playing some weird tune. The six pieces last altogether less than 19 minutes, which is perhaps the best thing for such a little curiosity. Great for confusion and confused to know what to say.

Thank you to experimental music magazine and podcast Vital Weekly for reviewing Farewell, Doomed Planet! and playing “Departure.” Issue 1206 is available here and says,

“[Farewell, Doomed Planet!]” can be jumpy and punky electro poppy, with Kelly singing with a fierce voice, but it also can be dreamy and spacey, such as in ‘Departure’. Going from synthpop to ambient to darker pastures of electronic pop music, she bounces neatly over the place.”
